Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
Even in this still life, artist Saverio Terruso maintains his expressionist language, which he develops especially in the subject of the "praying women." In this painting, he favors a pronounced synthesis of objects achieved through the use of paint. The entire space is compressed into a two-dimensional surface and broken down into different directional lines. The fruits are arranged with a simple and essential system of shapes. The brushstrokes are vigorous, and the artist's desire to emphasize the broad hatching gives the painting a distinctly rural feel. The palette is composed of very bright hues, which transcend the naturalistic to acquire an expressionistic quality.
Saverio Terruso was a painter born in Monreale in 1939 and passed away in 2003. His artistic career began in 1963 and grew through collaborations with artists such as Guttuso, Sassu, and Fiume. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows, not only in Italy, but also in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. He is represented in several Italian and international collections. His artistic language can be described as expressionism, revealing a certain folksy inclination, undoubtedly derived from Terruso's Mediterranean roots.
