Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. In this case, Terruso moves within the figurative realm, but exerts expressionistic overtones.
In this work, Saverio Terruso creates a substantially figurative composition, but its interpretation can essentially be attributed to an expressionist language. The two-dimensional figures are synthesized through long, broad brushstrokes that define their forms. Furthermore, these brushstrokes, with their curved motion, establish a sinuous rhythm throughout the work. The facial features are devoid of individualism and create iconic figures, symbols of a strong tradition and popular culture.
Saverio Terruso was a painter born in Monreale in 1939 and passed away in 2003. His artistic career began in 1963 and grew through collaborations with artists such as Guttuso, Sassu, and Fiume. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows, not only in Italy, but also in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. He is represented in several Italian and international collections. His artistic language can be described as expressionism, revealing a certain folksy inclination, undoubtedly derived from Terruso's Mediterranean roots.
