Description of the work
Description of the work
The praying women are Saverio Terruso's most recurring iconographic subject. They are female figures, wrapped in loose tunics that reveal only their faces and hands. Often, in Terruso's works, these women are reproduced in series, one next to the other, almost as a decorative motif. This subject has a strong popular connotation and demonstrates the close connection between Terruso's art and his homeland.
In this work, Saverio Terruso creates a substantially figurative composition, yet its interpretation can essentially be traced back to an expressionist language. The two-dimensional figures are synthesized through long, broad brushstrokes that define their forms. Furthermore, these brushstrokes, with their curved motion, establish a sinuous rhythm throughout the work. The facial features are devoid of individualism and create iconic figures, symbols of a strong tradition and popular culture. The vibrant polychromy is particularly pronounced in this particular work.
Saverio Terruso was a painter born in Monreale in 1939 and passed away in 2003. His artistic career began in 1963 and grew through collaborations with artists such as Guttuso, Sassu, and Fiume. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows, not only in Italy, but also in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. He is represented in several Italian and international collections. His artistic language can be described as expressionism, revealing a certain folksy inclination, undoubtedly derived from Terruso's Mediterranean roots.
