Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Sergio Scatizzi's landscape is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color. The hues themselves lack a complete connection with reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation.
This work is one of the beautiful landscapes to which Sergio Scatizzi devoted much of his production. For the Tuscan artist, color and brushstrokes are the fundamental elements of expression. Although firmly rooted in a figurative conception, Scatizzi's painting is profoundly material and gestural. The color is distributed in dense, full-bodied layers that almost elevate the painting's surface. Gesture is crucial, capable of giving form to the object with just a few essential touches. In this painting in particular, we see how Scatizzi creates a clear contrast between land and sky/sea in a balanced subdivision of chromatic zones that almost leads him to adopt an abstract-expressionist aesthetic. The result is a powerfully alive and vibrant depiction, an interpretation of painting that draws on the post-Impressionist tradition to achieve an extraordinary contemporaneity.
Sergio Scatizzi was born in Gragnano, in the province of Lucca, in 1918 and passed away in Florence in 2009. He trained first in Rome, influenced by Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphael. He later moved to Paris. In 1938, he returned to Italy and devoted himself to his native Valdinievole, whose landscapes would always be a prominent feature of his paintings. He exhibited extensively throughout his career. In 1950, he participated in the Venice Biennale.
