Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
Schiaroli's landscape painting style is characterized by a fully mature, post-Impressionist approach. His compositions are all constructed through color, and his brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the tangible details of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, breaking down the space into different planes, despite the essentiality of the representation, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the works is always in tune with a cold palette.
Schiaroli is known for his extensive production of landscapes, in which he exploits the expressive potential of color in a post-Impressionist style. His works are distinguished by a palette based on a cool palette, which also characterizes his genre scenes and portraits of simple villagers.
