Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting's subject is inspired by the episode reported in the Gospel of John in which Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. It is a widespread subject beginning in 16th-century painting and continuing to be widespread throughout Western painting both in the Baroque period and the 18th century.
A stylistic and formal analysis of this work reveals a prevailing classicist spirit. It is undoubtedly inspired by the great naturalism of the Renaissance, particularly Raphael, although the artist seems to draw more heavily on the Venetian school and the style of Paolo Veronese. Hence the monumentality of the figures, wrapped in flowing draperies, and their rounded forms, which undoubtedly also bear witness to Titian. A thoroughly naturalistic rendering, then, is also expressed through a pronounced atmosphericism. The artist uses a highly dynamic, extremely painterly style, which brings the execution to life and is charged with freshness. The light strikes the subject from the left, creating subtle shadows with perfect verisimilitude. The physiognomic, even rather idealized, character of the subjects' faces is extraordinary, just as the grandiloquence of the gestures, calibrated by harmonious proportions and balance, is typically Renaissance. Just as in line with sixteenth-century painting is the splendid landscape background.
The artist who executed this work can be identified as a worthy representative of the 16th-century classicist style. This is evident in the work's formal balance, evident in both the composition and the pictorial style, which maintains a harmony and rigor typical of Renaissance naturalism. The monumentality of the figures and the grandiloquence of sentiments expressed in the overall atmosphere of the work also hark back to a typically 16th-century pictorial style.
