SCRAMBLE

"Scramble, scramble, scramble" is an emergency phrase that signals an immediate and rapid launch of a fighter aircraft ready to Reserve, to intercept potential threats. Originally an order from the Battle of Britain, it indicates an urgent and often high-risk "rapid reaction alert."

Key aspects of a "Scramble" alert:

Military context: used to launch fighters  against unknown, enemy, or unauthorized aircraft.

Speed: Pilots on standby must suit up and take off, often in just a few minutes. Therefore, fully dressed and equipped, they would loiter near the aircraft, waiting for the alarm.

The term was used during the Battle of Britain , when Royal Air Force pilots and their fighters were ready and available to fly; once the command decided to intercept the enemy formation, a telephone call would be made to the chosen fighter squadron's airfield, and available aircrews would be scrambled immediately. Every minute lost before takeoff would be advantageous to the enemy, as it could allow a pilot to gain extra altitude above the advancing aircraft formations, an advantageous position for initiating combat.

The painting, of large dimensions 110X50, in grease acrylic on canvas and stretcher, presents precisely this emergency situation; during the epic Battle of Britain 10/1941, on the meadow where his squadron was based, a pilot runs towards his Spitfire MK III while the crew prepare the cockpit and two others are sitting on the tailplanes because with the engine running and the controls released the aircraft would raise its tail and begin to taxi by itself.
