Description of the work
Description of the work
Author's forgery, three-dimensional reconstruction of chromatic features through the use of water-based pigments on canvas applied to board.
The work perfectly reproduces the predella of the Coronation of the Virgin, a painting by Raphael Sanzio between 1502 and 1504 and housed in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, within the Vatican Museums. The work was created for the Oddi Chapel in the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia. The predella depicts three episodes from the life of the Virgin: the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Circumcision of Jesus.
The present work perfectly reproduces the style used by Raphael Sanzio in the execution of this predella, which is very interesting for understanding the evolution of the Urbino master's artistic language. The work, dating to the early 16th century, still shows a strong connection to Perugino's style. Although Raphael's technique is undoubtedly superior, he had not yet completely freed himself from the master's manner. This is particularly evident in the predella, where the small format leads Raphael to develop perspective boxes with a still fifteenth-century feel, featuring slender, graceful figures strongly reminiscent of those of Vannucci.
The work in question is a perfect copy of the original, created as part of the "Exemplaria Perfecta" project developed by the Vatican Museums. In this context, an innovative technique was developed, used for the first time in the world, allowing for the perfect three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic strokes. The in-depth knowledge of ancient painting techniques, combined with the use of this extraordinary artistic technique, has allowed for the creation of works of extraordinary craftsmanship with previously unmatched results.
