Description of the work
Description of the work
Author's copy, three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic features through the use of oil pigments on wood and pure gold gilding.
The work is a perfect copy of the "Madonna and Child with Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Anthony of Padua," painted by Giovanni di Pietro, known as Lo Spagna, around the end of the 15th century and housed in the Pinacoteca of the Vatican Museums. The painting is also known as the "Madonna del Latte" (Madonna of the Milk) because it features the iconographic variant of the Virgin breastfeeding the baby Jesus. This masterly copy is part of the "Exempla Perfecta" series produced by the Vatican Museums.
Originally from Spain (hence his nickname) but active primarily in Umbria between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Giovanni di Pietro, like the young Raphael, trained under the most important master of that region, Perugino. In this work too, Lo Spagna demonstrates a strong affinity with 15th-century Umbrian painting, whose characteristics are perfectly in line with the early Renaissance (in the classical sense of composition, in the exaltation of volumes in a rational perspective space), adding a refined grace and affectation in gestures and sentiments.
The work in question is a perfect copy of the original, created as part of the "Exemplaria Perfecta" project developed by the Vatican Museums. In this context, an innovative technique was developed, used for the first time in the world, allowing for the perfect three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic strokes. The in-depth knowledge of ancient painting techniques, combined with the use of this extraordinary artistic technique, has allowed for the creation of works of extraordinary craftsmanship with previously unmatched results.
