Description of the work
Author's copy, three-dimensional reconstruction of chromatic features through the use of oil pigments on canvas.
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, also known as the Madonna of the Cherries, is an oil on canvas painting by Federico Fiori, known as Federico Barocci (c. 1535–1612), created between 1570 and 1573. Originally from the Church of the Gesù in Perugia, it is now housed in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, part of the Vatican Museums. This master copy is part of the "Exempla Perfecta" series, created by the Vatican Museums.
This work reproduces one of Federico Barocci's masterpieces, which best expresses the distinctive style of the artist from the Marche region. A typical product of late sixteenth-century painting, which, guided by the dictates of the Counter-Reformation and aimed to free itself from the artifices of Mannerism, Barocci's art achieves a more intimate and realistic definition of the sacred scene, already anticipating the peculiarities of the Baroque. This is evident in this work, where the Holy Family performs humble, everyday gestures. Even formally, Barocci prefigures Baroque art in the monumentality of the forms and the dynamism of the composition. However, the Urbino artist retains a fundamental legacy of Mannerist artificiality that makes his style unique: a precious palette of fluorescent and pearly colors, full of light, which creates stunning chromatic harmonies in compressed and extremely lively compositions.
The work in question is a perfect copy of the original, created as part of the "Exemplaria Perfecta" project developed by the Vatican Museums. In this context, an innovative technique was developed, used for the first time in the world, allowing for the perfect three-dimensional reconstruction of the chromatic strokes. The in-depth knowledge of ancient painting techniques, combined with the use of this extraordinary artistic technique, has allowed for the creation of works of extraordinary craftsmanship with previously unmatched results.
