Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In the execution of this work, it is clear that for Senio Pratesi, depicting landscape means achieving, through the medium of painting, a delicate fusion between naturalistic rendering and poetry. Indeed, this view, in which he employs a purely figurative language, remains rooted in sensory data. Yet reality seems transfigured into a lyrical interpretation that almost transports it into a dreamlike dimension. Formally, all this translates into a highly delicate pictorial style where reality is represented in a rarefied manner. This means that the capture of realistic details and particulars is lost in favor of a more expressionistic and symbolic language. Pratesi's refined pictorial touch, which synthesizes objects with great delicacy, plays a key role in this process. Thus, the color palette is also distinguished by a delicate polychromy with emotional and spiritual overtones.
Senio Pratesi was born in Siena in 1926, but spent most of his career in Piombino, where he died in 2001. Pratesi exhibited for the first time in Siena in 1945, and it was precisely in the postwar period that he discovered the profound gap between his own culture and the avant-garde movements of the time. His pictorial research primarily focused on surrealism, but also explored more classical and traditional subjects, such as landscapes and floral compositions.
