Senio Pratesi - Surreal Painting

Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

Throughout his career, artist Senio Pratesi has explored various stylistic registers, including surrealism. In this aesthetic, the Tuscan artist faithfully draws on the historical avant-garde, and on Salvador Dalí in particular. Indeed, like the Catalan master, Senio Pratesi's surreal works are the result of a mix of free associations, combining cultural references with abstract elements, generally of a mechanomorphic nature. Formally, too, Pratesi consistently follows the Surrealist school, paradoxically rendering his visions concrete. Objects are treated with a harsh hyperrealism that enhances their plasticity, and there is obsessive attention to detail. They are inserted into spatial boxes constructed in an excessively rational manner.

Senio Pratesi was born in Siena in 1926, but spent most of his career in Piombino, where he died in 2001. Pratesi exhibited for the first time in Siena in 1945, and it was precisely in the postwar period that he discovered the profound gap between his own culture and the avant-garde movements of the time. His pictorial research primarily focused on surrealism, but also explored more classical and traditional subjects, such as landscapes and floral compositions.
