Description of the work
Description of the work
From an early age, Anna Maria Ballarati developed a profound inclination for creative expression, cultivated through drawing, painting, writing, and a natural sensitivity to color and form. Raised in a cultured family—with a father, Raffaello Ballarati, a man of diverse intellectual interests, and a Catalan mother originally from Barcelona—she was introduced from a very young age to museums, churches, and galleries in Italy and Spain. This dual cultural background is reflected in her sunny and determined personality and in a painting style dominated by bright, luminous colors. Self-taught by choice, Ballarati did not initially pursue a professional artistic career: rather, art would find its way to her.
Her debut was sudden yet impressive. Her first exhibition was held at the Galleria Il Canovaccio in Rome, where she exhibited alongside masters such as Mario Schifano, Alberto Sughi, and Ugo Attardi. Her exhibited works were dedicated to the theme of trees, marking the beginning of a coherent and recognizable path that earned her the nickname "Painter of the Tree of Life," a subject that would become a constant symbolic core of her research.
The Tree of Life, in Ballarati's works, is never a decorative element, but an existential metaphor: roots, trunk, blossoms, and seasonal cycles become images of growth, transformation, and continuity. Stylistically, the artist traverses abstraction, abstract expressionism, and conceptual art, always maintaining a strong material component, enriched with textures, collages, and metallic inserts. Intense and vibrant color is the primary vehicle for a direct and vital emotional language.
Over the course of over twenty-five years of activity, Anna Maria Ballarati has exhibited in important institutional venues and galleries in Italy and abroad, including Palazzo Barberini, Palazzo Medici Clarelli in Rome, and Palazzo Doria Pamphili in Valmontone, receiving numerous awards and recognitions, including the Critics' Prize in Segni, in collaboration with prominent critics such as Duccio Trombatori. Her work has received constant attention from newspapers and trade magazines, including internationally, with publications in Italian and English, covers, full-page spreads, and television interviews. She has been a frequent guest on TV programs, featured in university interviews (including UNISO), and featured in institutional settings such as the Chamber of Deputies, as well as in international calendars and editorial projects.
A distinctive element of his exhibition work is the "Canvas of Signatures," a participatory device that replaces the traditional guestbook. As explained by Dr. Laura Cardia, a developmental psychologist, this approach stems from the idea that art should not be passively enjoyed, but rather experienced as a shared experience: the audience becomes an active participant in the work, helping imbue it with personal and emotional meaning. This practice is complemented by a constant focus on young people: in each of his solo exhibitions, Ballarati dedicates a space to children's drawings, awarding them a certificate of participation as symbolic co-authors of the event.
Alongside his artistic career, Ballarati works in the fields of design and innovation: he is the sole director of an LLC, holds patents in the cosmetics sector, and works as an industrial designer in his studio in Rome's Prati district, which he runs with designer Ennio Cardia. He writes reviews, prefaces, and art articles, has created television programs, and is actively involved in organizing cultural events. He paints primarily at night, when the city falls silent, continuing to develop his research focused on nature and the Tree of Life, today more than ever a symbol of balance, energy, and rebirth.
