Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
In his sculptures, Sergio Capellini often draws on a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. This work, however, is a striking example of how this artist, while remaining figurative, can also adopt anti-naturalistic forms. In this knight, we see how the subject is characterized by expressive modulations that accentuate his dynamism and physical effort. All the lines of the composition are designed to suggest to the viewer a sense of frenetic movement and strength, developing in every direction in a centrifugal rhythm. The energy of the human/animal group is accentuated through the deformation of the bodies, which elongate and taper (note, in particular, the taut line formed by the arm brandishing the sword). The complex modeling of the material, with clear references to the dissolution of form typical of nineteenth-century Romantic painting, also contributes to the creation of this original figure of a fantastical and quixotic warrior.
Sergio Capellini is a sculptor born in Bologna in 1942. In 1962, he moved to Rome, where he trained. In 1978, he moved to Verona and later to Isolalta di Viganio, where he lives and works. He has created commissioned works that can be found in squares, public and private buildings, and sacred places. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the USA, Canada, and Japan.
