Sergio Favotto - Deposition

The iconographic theme of the Deposition refers to the subject of the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ," which became popular starting in the 14th century. While the "Lamentation" is a group scene featuring more or less fixed figures (Mary, the apostle John, Mary Magdalene and the pious women, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus), the "Pietà" is a variant, featuring only Mary holding the body of Christ in her arms. In this case, a second figure is also added.

In his interpretation of sacred art subjects, artist Sergio Favotto emphasizes the dramatic nature of the work, clearly accentuating the departure from naturalistic representation. The sense of the sacred and the divine is conveyed through an expressionist synthesis, through which natural truth gives way to a process of abstraction with a precise conceptual value. Thus, the scenes are constructed through broad brushstrokes, dense with pictorial substance. Finally, even the color transcends the confines of realism, adopting more spiritual than naturalistic tones.

He carries out his activity in Musano (TV), where he was born in 1945. He began exhibiting in Treviso in 1965, arriving at the important exhibitions in Turin and London in 1969 and currently has over 300 collective and solo exhibitions in galleries, historic villas and museums in Italy and abroad: Treviso, Turin, Venice, Brescia, London, Milan, Paris (in the historic Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, at the Grand Palais and at the Salon des Nations), at the Fiera del Levante in Bari and Udine, in Rome, Taranto, Trieste, Udine, Lignano, Reggio Emilia and in Caracas, Merida, Ciudad Guyana, in New York (at the Planet Studio, the Stendhal Gallery and at NY University), in Toronto, Düsseldorf, Imperia, San Remo, La Spezia, Victoria and La Valletta (Malta), as well as many other prestigious locations.
