Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi. In this vase of flowers by Sergio Scatizzi, his style, characterized by powerfully textured painting, fades somewhat, in favor of a more pictorial type of representation. The object, in fact, appears to have its own form, which the painter, however, shapes with a brushstroke charged with existential vibrations. It's a type of language that seems more influenced by Mario Mafai and the Roman School. Sergio Scatizzi was born in Gragnano, in the province of Lucca, in 1918 and passed away in Florence in 2009. He trained first in Rome, influenced by Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphael. He later moved to Paris. In 1938, he returned to Italy and devoted himself to his native Valdinievole, whose landscapes would always be prominent in his paintings. He exhibited extensively throughout his career. In 1950, he participated in the Venice Biennale.
