Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also played a leading role in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

Sergio Vellani is an artist specializing in etchings that often feature the human body, particularly the female figure, which becomes the object of his in-depth exploration. This study is directed toward a formal synthesis that leads to an exploration of the very essence of the subject while simultaneously enhancing its formal values. In this sense, we can appreciate how the artist reduces sensory data and physiognomic description to arrive at an absolutely objective image, conveying broader meanings than an individual portrait. Furthermore, this image is constructed primarily through color, which plays a decidedly structural role. Indeed, it is the density of the application and the overlapping of color on different planes that enhances the plastic qualities of the figure and the space in which it is inserted, even in a representation devoid of any drawn structure. In this way, the artist, with a highly expressive language, can highlight the complex torsion of this body in a movement that enhances its plasticity. Also fundamental is the use of the marked black line which determines the presence of deep shadows.
Artist Sergio Vellani was born in Carpi in 1918 and has always lived and worked in Bologna. Most of his paintings have focused on the reproduction of female figures or horses in motion. This has given him the opportunity to conduct in-depth research into the formal synthesis of the human body or figures in motion. This synthesis, in Sergio Vellani's work, perfectly combines the need for a highly expressive artistic language with the exaltation of plastic values. Sergio Vellani was a master, above all, of printmaking techniques. His works are held in the museums of Carpi and Montecatini Terme.
