Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
In this beautiful bas-relief depicting the Madonna and Child, artist Sergio Verginelli tones down his expressionistic tendencies to create a composition characterized by a more classical and traditional balance. The group is depicted with excellent naturalistic rendering, with the figures depicted in detailed physiognomy. Furthermore, the compositional structure is quite rigorous, with the figures tightly packed into a triangular pattern. Yet even in this classicist harmony, Sergio Verginelli's typical sculptural colorism emerges in the complex movement of the drapery. The numerous folds create a jagged movement that creates a striking contrast with the smoothness and purity of the faces.
Sergio Verginelli is a Roman artist born in 1941, coming from a family of artists. After various experiences, Sergio Verginelli chose sculpture as his medium, beginning with a classical naturalism. He later explored more expressive forms. He has a long career behind him, featuring numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe.
