Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts a man, likely a jester, sitting on a white horse. The man's figure is depicted in an almost standing posture, staring directly at the viewer. Next to him, on the left, is a dog, rendered in an extremely stylized, almost abstract manner, with white lines that define it without complex details. The scene conveys a sense of stillness, with the horse, though in motion, appearing stationary.
The work's style is distinguished by its use of strong contrasts between light and dark colors. The white horse stands out sharply against the background and the man dressed in black, while the dog, stylized with white lines, almost seems to float in the image. The background is characterized by quick, dynamic brushstrokes in shades of dark green and red, which seem to evoke a sense of movement without any real defined detail. The choice to minimize details and focus on lines and splashes of color gives the work a stylized, immediate, and gestural feel.
Silvio Loffredo, born in Paris in 1920 to Italian parents, was a painter and art teacher. Trained by his father, a naturalist painter, he studied in Siena and Rome, then moved to Florence, where he met artists such as Ottone Rosai. He participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial. In the 1960s, he studied with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg, developing an expressionist and chromatic style. He also worked in experimental film with his brother Victor. From 1973, he taught painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He received numerous awards, including the silver medal for lifetime achievement in 2003. He died in 2013 in Trebiano. His works are exhibited in various museums, including the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
