Description of the work
Description of the work
Sinisca's artistic research falls within the realm of Spatialist aesthetics. Born in 1946 with Lucio Fontana's Manifesto Blanco, Spatialism posed primarily as a question of how artworks were perceived. The movement's goal was to definitively transcend the closed dimension of the artwork for a perceptual experience that definitively engaged Space. Hence, the use of electronic technical devices, employed for their ability to radiate energy, or the use of gestural techniques, such as holes or cuts, to break through the surface of the artwork and invade it with the accidentality of reality. In Sinisca's case, the artwork's engagement with space and its concreteness are realized through the viewer's ability to modify it. His sculptures, in fact, are configured as dynamic and interchangeable modules.
In Sinisca's "Variable Structure," the work's title already informs us of the artist's artistic vision. For Sinisca, the work is not static, but dynamic and variable, capable of assuming different configurations, also thanks to the intervention of the viewer. For this reason, the sculpture is composed of a series of modules whose positions can be modified, leading to a series of results calculated by the artist according to a precise algorithm. This profound rationalist and mathematical spirit that pervades Sinisca's work, from an aesthetic perspective, is also connected to a strong biomorphic character, as his structures can be understood as cellular organisms or segments of DNA whose mutations are based on the same algorithms calculated by the artist.
Sinisca is a Neapolitan artist born in 1929. He currently lives and works between Rome, New York, and Spello. He began his career in 1958 and is now among the most renowned Italian artists. His works are exhibited not only in major museums around the world, but also feature prominently in important squares and buildings. Despite his diverse artistic practice, one constant element is found in his work: space.
