Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
A typical work of the painter Sirius, this artist specialized in the reproduction of seascapes and sailing ships, which he interpreted with his remarkable technique. Sirius's skill is such that he achieves a perfect naturalistic rendering. The description is detailed and objective. The play of light reflecting on the water's surface is remarkable. Sirius's skill lies in maintaining a perfect balance between capturing sensory information and a fresh representation, which is achieved thanks to the dynamism of his brushstrokes.
Sirio Fascetti, aka Sirius, was born in Le Grazie (Portovenere) in the province of La Spezia on February 7, 1923. Self-taught, he began painting in 1960 for pleasure, striving to continually improve over time. All subjects are congenial to him, but he favors seascapes, stormy seas, old sailing ships, and naval battle scenes. For this reason, he is also known as Sirius, "the painter of the sea."
