Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered genre scenes, which depict an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents. This type of subject also fits within the broader theme of the navy, a recurring theme among artists. First, because of the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small ports. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
The painting was created with a remarkable Impressionist technique. The artist uses rapid, hatched brushstrokes to quickly delineate shapes and volumes. This allows him to capture, with every single brushstroke, the effects of light and atmosphere on objects, and to instantly convey a seascape with precise weather and environmental conditions onto the canvas. The entire color palette, from the shore to the sky, is designed to reflect the precise atmospheric conditions intended to be represented in a perfect conception of plein air painting. As with the Impressionists, the perspective grid is not eliminated; spatial depth is determined exclusively through the modulations of color.
As we can see from this work, Sitalir is a painter deeply rooted in an Impressionist style. His painting style fully reflects the tradition of plein air and the immediate rendering of landscapes.
