Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work is epic-mythological and refers to the Odyssey cycle, specifically the episodes of the so-called "Telemachy." The scene depicts sea deities approaching Mentor's ship. A faithful friend of Odysseus, it is to Mentor (who disguised himself as Athena) that the Ithacan hero entrusts his home and family upon his departure for the Trojan War. He is remembered for his role as educator and companion of Telemachus in his search for his father, hence the meaning the term "mentor" has acquired in today's language.
The print's iconography is typical of an illustration for didactic purposes, perfectly suited to accompany a literary text, in this case an epic. For this reason, the scene has a strongly narrative character and is rich in imaginative details, designed to pique the curiosity and interest of a sophisticated reader. Given its didactic purpose, the print was created with an elegant design that captures every detail with meticulous precision. It features a conventional and idealized character, typical of this type of illustration, with a strong classicist influence, also inspired by the type of literature to which the scene refers. This idealization can be seen in the characters' statuesque forms and their courtly poses. The drawing was created with a very fine cross-hatching technique.
The print's author is a refined illustrator of classical and traditional genres, creating idealized, richly detailed images for didactic purposes. His training is undoubtedly academic and is evident in his excellent engravings.
