Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of the depiction of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. In the present work, the artist proposes the subject of a marine still life, a composition in which, instead of fruit, marine fauna predominates, often placed on the seashore. A painter famous for executing this type of subject was, for example, Filippo De Pisis.
As we can see in the execution of this beautiful watercolor, the artist Stassi distinguishes himself with a predominantly symbolist representation of reality. Indeed, he remains faithful to the natural elements, which he faithfully reproduces in his paintings. However, in his representation, he introduces subtle distortions of reality itself to transfigure it into a symbolic dimension. Thus, exploiting the peculiarities of diluted color, typical of watercolor, Stassi achieves a delicate synthesis of the composition's elements, which thus appear emptied of their plastic concreteness, like diaphanous apparitions. This interpretation is completed by the choice of colors, which transcends the natural, adopting hues that also have emotional and symbolic value. The overall tone of lightness is maintained through the prevalence of white, balanced with streaks of blue and violet.
Artist Salvatore Stassi, born in Palermo in 1940, stands out for his mastery of watercolor. Through diluted paint, he interprets sensory reality in a symbolic, ethereal, and emotional dimension.
