Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks proposed the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality.

While Stefano Tonelli's subjects generally engage in a surreal, dreamlike, mystical, or esoteric dimension, the stylistic approaches to these subjects are diverse, demonstrating the artist's eclectic and versatile nature. However, a common thread throughout Stefano Tonelli's work is a consistent tendency toward abstraction and minimalism. As we can see in this work, the representation is stripped down to the essentials, and the subject appears as a silhouette against a dynamic background. An expressionistic aspect thus prevails in Tonelli's pictorial language, evident also in the way the figure is deformed and unnaturally elongated. This expressionism takes on a decidedly symbolic character in the mystical dimension perceived in this work. Formally, the pictorial layering is also complex, almost gestural, yet remains consistent with the abstract-expressionist character of the entire painting.
Stefano Tonelli is an artist from Montescudaio. In the 1970s, he made his research public by participating in numerous events and exhibitions. Since the 1980s, however, he has rarely participated in exhibitions, instead participating primarily in performances. He uses a variety of techniques and styles with great ease. Over the past ten years, he has exhibited in prestigious venues in Rome, Milan, New York, Berlin, Paris, Hamburg, Madrid, and Lisbon. He participated in the 54th Venice Biennale.
