Description of the work
Description of the work
This collection celebrates the unification of Italy: a journey marked by the reminting of the first coin of the United Italy (the 5 lire of 1861) and the coins minted for the fiftieth anniversary (the 50 lire of 1911) and the centenary (the 500 lire of 1961) anniversaries. Different representations are featured on the various coins: the 5 lire features the profile head of King Vittorio Emanuele II on the obverse, while the reverse features the coat of arms with a cross and crown, designed by Luigi Gori. The 50 lire coin of 1911 features the head of King Vittorio Emanuele III, while the reverse depicts a plow and Rome with a flower-decorated plow. The design for this coin is by Domenico Trentacoste, while the engraving is by Luigi Giorgi. The last coin is the 500 lire of 1961 which features on the obverse the turreted Italy with helmet and olive branch and on the reverse the racing Quadriga, designed by Guido Veroi.
