Description of the work
Description of the work
The History of European Art by UTET Grandi Opere was launched in 2018 to celebrate the first European Year of Cultural Heritage, established by the European Union. Together with Giuseppe Galasso's History of Europe and Boitani and Massimo Fusillo's European Literature, it forms an ideal triptych on Europe's cultural and civic identity. The work covers the history of art in Europe from the end of the Roman Empire to the loss of European centrality in the second half of the twentieth century, and aims to highlight the many tangible and intangible elements of our culture. These include traditions, craftsmanship in its various forms, knowledge relating to food, games, the arts, and much more. But there is no doubt that Europe's cultural heritage is based above all on humanity's most important form of creativity and communication: visual art. Humans use it not only to shape history but also to recount the unspeakable, the invisible, the sacred, the feelings and ideas of individuals and communities.
For us Europeans, art offers a unique way to tell who we are, our history. And artistic heritage is our true and common European identity, the only language that, beyond our differences, we all share and understand. This is why artistic culture becomes an essential tool for self-awareness, especially for the citizens of tomorrow. The narrative flows seamlessly because the main text is written by a single author, chosen for his depth in handling the entire span of European art history and for his ability to combine scientific rigor with comprehensibility even for non-experts: Flaminio Gualdoni, professor of Art History at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
Seven authoritative specialists collaborated on specific topics: Franco Cardini, Antonio Paolucci, Bernard Aikema, Edouard Pommier, Claudio Strinati, Fernando Marìas Franco, and Nathalie Heinich. The richness of the iconography is a central part of the work. 1,200 images, mostly full- and double-page spreads, provide an essential learning tool, a veritable gallery of masterpieces for a journey of visual experiences paralleling the textual journey.
