Description of the work
Description of the work
In the contemporary context, seascapes as a pictorial subject continue to be widely explored by artists. Turin-based artist Leonardo Stroppa has particularly dedicated himself to this subject, depicting a scene rich in color and impressions, with a simplistic take on reality. This depiction, in which very delicate relationships between symbols and colors emerge, explores a reality that looks to the everyday, paying attention to the artistic movements of the time, namely the Turin-based Group of Six. This artistic collective, formed in 1928 under the influence of Edoardo Persico, included artists such as Enrico Paulucci, Nicola Galante, Gigi Chessa, Francesco Menzio, Carlo Levi, and Jessie Boswell. The Group was distinguished by its distinctive characteristics: its rebellion against Futurism, although there was a pictorial-intellectual connection; its international influence, particularly in the Parisian context, with attention to Modigliani, Manet, and Dufy; and its interest in social representation.
Delicate brushwork and a simplified composition are the key words for observing Leonardo Stroppa's painting. A brushstroke that relies on the expressive and truthful colors of the representation, framing a view in its essentiality. The light emerges calmly within the canvas, confirming the purity of the color and its rendering.
Leonardo Stroppa (1900 – 1991) was a figurative painter from Turin who frequented the avant-garde circles of the Accademia Albertina and the Gruppo dei 6 in Turin. A painter with a distinctly European taste, he interacted with the leading exponents of Parisian painting of the time. One of his works is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin, and many others were shown in Antwerp, Paris, and Zurich. In his artistic production, the painter's preferred medium was watercolor.
