Description of the work
Description of the work
Depictions of riverboats in art offer a fascinating glimpse into human life, commerce, and the natural beauty along waterways. They highlight the continuing influence and inspiration that riverboats have exerted on art throughout the centuries. This very aspect is taken up and interpreted by the painter Leonardo Stroppa, depicting a scene rich in color and impressions, with a simplistic aspect of reality. This representation, in which delicate chromatic and sign relationships emerge, exploring a reality that reflects the everyday, is borrowed by the painter from external influences, namely the Turin-based Gruppo dei Sei. This artistic collective, formed in 1928 under the influence of Edoardo Persico, included artists such as Enrico Paulucci, Nicola Galante, Gigi Chessa, Francesco Menzio, Carlo Levi, and Jessie Boswell. The Group was distinguished by distinctive characteristics: the rebellion against Futurism, although there was a connection on a pictorial-intellectual level, the influence on an international level especially thinking about the Parisian context looking at Modigliani, Manet, Dufy and the interest in social representation.
Delicate lines and a simplified composition are the key words for observing Leonardo Stroppa's painting. A brushstroke that relies on the expressive and truthful colors of the representation, framing a view in its essentiality. The light emerges calmly within the canvas, confirming the purity of the color and its rendering. A look at everyday life that does not abandon the drawing, lending an interesting modulation to the simplified forms.
Leonardo Stroppa (1900 – 1991) was a figurative painter from Turin who frequented the avant-garde circles of the Accademia Albertina and the Gruppo dei 6 in Turin. A painter with a distinctly European taste, he interacted with the leading exponents of Parisian painting of the time. One of his works is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin, and many others were shown in Antwerp, Paris, and Zurich. In his artistic production, the painter's preferred medium was watercolor.
