Description of the work
Description of the work
Mountain landscapes have inspired numerous artists throughout history, giving rise to iconic works that celebrate the grandeur and majesty of mountain peaks. However, Turin-based artist Leonardo Stroppa has depicted a different landscape, observing the roads that cut through mountain villages. This representation, in which delicate relationships of sign and color emerge, explores a reality that looks at everyday life, extrapolated by the artist thanks to external influences such as the Turin-based Group of Six. This artistic collective formed in 1928 under the influence of Edoardo Persico, and which included artists of the caliber of Enrico Paulucci, Nicola Galante, Gigi Chessa, Francesco Menzio, Carlo Levi, and Jessie Boswell, was distinguished by distinctive characteristics: its rebellion against Futurism, although there was a connection on a pictorial-intellectual level; its international influence, particularly in the Parisian context, with attention to Modigliani, Manet, and Dufy; and its interest in social representation. The scene opens with the perspective of a road that divides the composition and draws the eye toward the mountain horizon. The work we observe demonstrates a delicate line and a simplified composition. A brushstroke that relies on the expressive and truthful colors of the representation, framing the subject within its everyday context. The light emerges calmly and purely. Leonardo Stroppa (1900 – 1991) was a figurative painter from Turin who frequented the avant-garde circles of the Accademia Albertina and the Turin Group of Six. A painter with a distinctly European taste, he interacted with the leading exponents of Parisian painting of the time. One of his works is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin, and many others were shown in Antwerp, Paris, and Zurich. In his artistic production, the painter's preferred medium was watercolor.
