Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the vase of flowers is punctuated by numerous stylistic and creative possibilities. In this specific case, Turin-based artist Leonardo Stroppa depicted a scene rich in color and impressions, with a simplistic take on reality. This representation, in which very delicate relationships between symbols and colors emerge, explores a reality that reflects the everyday. These devices employed by the painter are drawn from external influences and experiences, namely the Turin-based Group of Six. This artistic collective, formed in 1928 under the influence of Edoardo Persico, included artists such as Enrico Paulucci, Nicola Galante, Gigi Chessa, Francesco Menzio, Carlo Levi, and Jessie Boswell. It was distinguished by its distinctive characteristics: its rebellion against Futurism, although there was a connection on a pictorial-intellectual level; its international influence, particularly in the Parisian context, with attention to Modigliani, Manet, and Dufy; and its interest in social representation.
The work we observe expresses a delicate line and a simplified composition. The vase, set against a pastel monochrome background, highlights the graceful yellow roses, lending a touch of light to the paper. A brushstroke that relies on the expressive and authentic colors of the representation, framing the subject within its everyday context. The luminous element emerges with calm and purity.
Leonardo Stroppa (1900 – 1991) was a figurative painter from Turin who frequented the avant-garde circles of the Accademia Albertina and the Gruppo dei 6 in Turin. A painter with a distinctly European taste, he interacted with the leading exponents of Parisian painting of the time. One of his works is exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin, and many others were shown in Antwerp, Paris, and Zurich. In his artistic production, the painter's preferred medium was watercolor.
