Surdi - Still Life

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.

Luigi Surdi's painting style lies midway between profound realism and a lyrical sense of representation. The artist remains committed to a naturalistic conception of representation, which leads him to describe objects in every detail. However, his brushstrokes are swift and concise, imbuing the subject with existential vibrations through a dynamic application of color. Surdi immerses us in the life inherent in fruit and conceives the work with a very close-up that occupies almost the entire space of the painting.

Luigi Surdi was a Neapolitan painter, born in 1897 and died in 1959. His first exhibition was in 1921 at the Grigio-verdi exhibition in Naples. He participated in the 14th Venice Biennale and was present at every edition of the Rome Quadriennale at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni from 1930 to 1960.
