Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

In this painting, Sutteri demonstrates his mastery of watercolor technique. The artist creates the structure of the work through a few graphic lines that synthetically delineate the volumes of the buildings and, therefore, the space of the body of water. The rest is all color, diluted to create iridescent hues that transcend simple phenomenal reality. All this gives a strong emotional and spiritual significance to this type of representation, more symbolic than naturalistic.
