Description of the work
Description of the work
The landscape has always been a protagonist in artistic research, both as
setting, as a background, but also as the subject itself.
naturalistic description of the landscape was one of the major aspirations
for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own
interpretation of the landscape contributing to the evolution of its
description: first with a research on space, through perspective
Brunelleschi's in the early Renaissance; then on the atmospheric rendering in the
Sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration
of light on objects in Impressionism. Even the historical avant-gardes and
contemporary trends have often taken inspiration from the theme
of the landscape. This work by Tano Festa is a splendid example and is very significant of the way of conceiving the exotic landscape in the context
of the “School of Piazza del Popolo” and of the interpretation of Pop-art in
Italy.
During his artistic career Tano Festa also welcomed the requests of the
The Piazza del Popolo School, which in turn was influenced by the Pop
American art. In this work we have a classic example of how
a massified image (an exotic and banal landscape, almost like a postcard),
transforms into something different through the artist's intervention. First of all
Festa creates an expressionist synthesis of phenomenal reality. The details are
reduce in favor of a simplified and, therefore, iconic representation.
Everything is deliberately stereotyped, since the same images, in the society of
consumption, have lost their value. This conceptual operation, however, is
created by the pictorial gesture of Tano Festa, powerful in connoting the
composition, although essential, of deep vibrations and refined in the
color combinations. From a chromatic point of view we can see
the peculiarities of Tano Festa's style that make him a unique artist: he
wants to bring the subject to an exaggerated saturation of colors, with clear
reference to the aggressiveness of the media, advertising and otherwise, of language
modern. For this reason Tano Festa uses strong colours, provoking
dissonant combinations in a refined contrast.
Tano Festa was a Roman artist, born in 1938 and died in 1988.
He was one of the protagonists of the Pop scene of the capital, but in his research
also welcomed the New Dada instances relating to the poetics of the object. In fact
His compositions are famous, in which he proposes isolated objects of everyday use
monochrome newspaper. Starting in the 1960s, he began reworking
of images of Renaissance art through the language of
mass communication.
