Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
This work is highly significant in showing how the painter Tarcisio conceived the representation of the human figure. The artist is not interested in the anatomical description of the subject, but in the composition of the work. Thus, the human figure is resolved in an interplay of masses and volumes that overlap in space. To this end, Tarcisio uses a very dense layering, with a palette knife technique laden with color, to enhance the plasticity of the subject's volumes.
Poalo Generali was born in Fano in 1904 and passed away in 1998. He took the name Tarcisio when he took monastic vows. His training began at an early age in the workshop of his father, a decorator and set designer. Initially, he practiced drawing, but later developed a passion for color, which led him to adopt the palette knife technique typical of his painting.
