Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting depicts a large ship stranded along a rocky coast, at a time of day when the sky is overcast but a light can be glimpsed on the horizon, perhaps dawn or dusk, as the title suggests. The vessel, now stationary and rusty, appears out of commission. The landscape is silent and deserted, with a calm sea and a bare beach. The title suggests a symbolic end, perhaps connected to the ship itself or to an important event connected to it. The work conveys a sense of calm, but also of ending and transition. The work is created using a traditional oil technique, which enhances the contrast between light and shadow. The colors are muted and realistic: brown, gray, and green tones predominate, giving the painting a natural and sober look. The details of the ship, the sky, and the rocks are meticulously crafted, but not overly precise: the artist leaves room for interpretation. The overall atmosphere is calm and reflective, and the pictorial style is reminiscent of twentieth-century figurative painting. Tarek Mufti is an artist about whom little is known. On the back of the work, his signature, a date (August 1982), and the name of the Syrian city of Homs appear, along with some writing in Arabic. This suggests the artist has Syrian origins or ties. Although not widely known, the painting demonstrates good technical mastery and sensitivity in the depiction of the subject. The work could be linked to a personal memory or a locally known historical event. The date 1982 and the reference to Homs, a city in Syria, could evoke a period of tension and internal conflict in the country, including the repression of the Muslim Brotherhood and moments of great political and social instability. The image of the stranded ship could therefore take on a symbolic meaning linked to these events, representing an end, a blockage, or a loss, but also the possibility of a new beginning, as the title "The Dawn of a Sunset" suggests.
