Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

Tarik Berber's pictorial research focuses on the representation of the human figure and portraiture. His work can certainly be considered an expressionist style, but one that draws on profound influences from the past. Indeed, the artist conceives a formal synthesis of the human figure, which takes on a fascinatingly archaic patina through pictorial citations, albeit made up of ancient images invented by the painter himself. Tarik Berber's figures appear to have emerged from 14th-century frescoes and Renaissance canvases, or have the hieratic quality of Byzantine icons. The extraordinary nature of this painter's work lies in the fact that his exploration of models and images is far from slavish imitation; on the contrary, his paintings are characterized by a remarkable stylistic and compositional freshness. This is due to Tarik Berber's extensive work on form. His pictorial expression is extremely elaborate, maintaining a perfect balance between an antique patina and a thoroughly contemporary material gesture.
Tarik Berber was born in 1980 in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has lived in Bolzano, Italy, since 1991, and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He is already a well-known artist both in Italy and abroad, and has collaborated with numerous prestigious galleries, including internationally. His works have been exhibited at numerous exhibitions, including the inauguration of the MACI (Museum of Contemporary Art of Isernia), the Second InTranSito Biennial, National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, the GBSalvi-Aperture International Art Exhibition in Sassoferrato, and the Second International Art Exhibition Citta' di Bozzolo, Don Primo Mazzolari, where he won first prize. In May 2006, he had his first solo exhibition at the National Museum of Villa Pisani, Stra, Venice. Towards the end of 2015, he began working with the prestigious Albemarle Gallery in London (Mayfair). In 2016, he was a finalist in the Ibero-American Art Award Exhibition at the Brazilian Embassy in London. In 2018, he began collaborating with the VSArte Gallery in Milan (Brera), and in July of the same year, he held a solo exhibition, Windsor Beauties, at the Aria Art Gallery in Istanbul. In January 2020, the Maimeri Foundation hosted the retrospective, “Seven Sisters.”
