Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The artist Gianni Tedeschi, in his diverse oeuvre, practices highly classical and traditional genres such as landscape painting, still life, and floral composition.

This work is part of a series of paintings in which Gianni Tedeschi demonstrates his Post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape or still life, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, breaks down the space into different planes and fleshes out the material, recording the vibrations of light and life in the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad brushstrokes, dense with a material color. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying color palette that leans toward light and luminous tones.

Gianni Tedeschi was born in Genoa in 1922 and passed away in Altopiano in 2018. His life was marked by many experiences, including his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Fascist Repression Organization, his enlistment in the Tenth Flotilla, the harsh experience of prison (as a political prisoner for 11 years), and then his freedom, the death of his father, and his love for Marisa, whom he married in 1963, and their two daughters, Francesca and Laura. In 1969, he moved to Asiago and fell in love with Altopiano, where his home became the Atelier Tedeschi. In the last years of his life, having become blind, he also devoted himself to writing. Among his many works is the autobiography "Dall'Ovra alla Decima Mas."
