Description of the work
Description of the work
Carmelo Conte, a painter and sculptor, was born on July 9, 1946, in Latiano, Puglia, where he lives and works. After his initial years of study at the Grottaglie School of Art, he continued his self-taught career, following his natural talent.
His artistic journey began in 1967 and, starting from peasant civilization, he came, over time, to develop broad themes alternating painting with sculpture.
He has held numerous exhibitions in many Italian cities, including Florence, Mestre, Milan, Ferrara, Padua, Pordenone, Lecce, Taranto, Brindisi, Legnano, and abroad, consistently receiving positive reviews from the most qualified critics. His monumental works are famous: "To the Carabiniere" in Francavilla Fontana (Brescia), "Vittime del Caporalato" in Oria (Brescia), "Milite Ignoto" in Torre S. Susanna (Brescia), "Blessed Bartolo Longo" in Pompeii, "La Terra Risorta e le porte del cielo" at the Latiano Cemetery, and in France, the monument to the SAR aviators who died in a flight accident in 2008.
It is in Sacred Art that Carmelo Conte finds essence, spirituality, and awareness of creation, and by shaping matter in a kind of ecstasy, he attempts to penetrate the mystery of God. In this field, he creates numerous tabernacles, Stations of the Cross, altars, pulpits, bronze doors, and stained-glass windows. It was the subject of two graduate theses: the first, "On the Trail of Carmelo Conte," by Nicoletta De Giorgio of the University of Bologna; the second, "Carmelo Conte's Artistic Activity," by Maria Cristina Tagliente of the University of Lecce.
