The Homilies of Organyà

The Homilies of Organyà are considered the first literary text written in Catalan and the first known translation into the Romance languages. According to the most recent studies, the author of this manuscript is an Augustinian monk from Tortosa Cathedral .

There are other books in Catalan written before the Homilies, but they are administrative documents or translations of Latin legal texts, practical texts. In any case, the emergence of written Catalan is a gradual process of which the Homilies represent a major step; at the same time, it represents an elaborate written practice, and is considered the first purely literary example of the Catalan language .

The Homilies feature a lively, highly expressive, and mature language , testifying to the antiquity of the Catalan language, its deep roots in the times, lands, and peoples. In the Homilies, the Catalan language finds its certificate of authenticity, evidence of its being the foundation of the cultural heritage and a historical model for the contemporary language.

The Homilies were discovered in 1904 in the church of Santa Maria dell'Organyà.
