Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This work is a prime example of Tino Aime's pictorial output. His painting style, closely linked to his sculptural work, is always characterized by clean, precise lines that construct volumes with great plasticity and a graphic style that prioritizes drawing over brushstrokes. Consequently, the subject is constructed in monochrome, as if it were an engraving. The contribution of a more strictly pictorial approach can be found in the description of the space surrounding the figure, which is represented as a chromatic blur of white and orange that imbues the entire work with a deeper expressiveness.
Tino Aime was born in Cuneo in 1931. He currently lives in Gravere, in the Susa Valley. He attended the Libera Accademia in Turin and subsequently began exhibiting as a sculptor; he later turned to painting and graphic art; his fame in these fields is international. He began exhibiting in 1963, receiving awards in Italy, France, Romania, and the United States. Since 1983, his works have been included in the renowned and prestigious Prandi catalogue of Reggio Emilia. In 1997, the Province of Turin produced a calendar dedicated entirely to Tino Aime's graphic art. The Piedmont Region held a solo exhibition of his work in 1992.
