Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

In this painting, Tito Salomoni, while remaining within his signature style, chooses a subject in which surrealism is less pronounced. The work, in fact, presents a simple landscape, and the sense of alienation is delegated to the mysterious encounter between the knight and the woman glimpsed in the background. The depiction methods, however, are in line with Salomoni's typical work, with a pure objectivism devoid of atmospheric effects and in tune with cool tones.

Tito Salomoni, born in Pontelagoscuro in 1928 and died in Turin in 1986, was initially inspired by Flemish realism, with pronounced trompe l'oeil effects. He later moved to surrealist subjects, maintaining a hyperrealist style and drawing inspiration from De Chirico and Delvaux. His art received numerous international awards, and he exhibited his paintings in numerous shows both in Italy and abroad.
