Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Tiziana Fantini is an artist who has devoted much of her career to portraiture, offering a variety of interpretations, from the more formal to the more expressionistic. In this case, we find a synthesis of the two tendencies, captured in a series of face studies drawn on paper. In what can be considered a quick portrait, we find all of Tiziana Fantini's formal quality in the way the subject's head is drawn. It has full volume, and the facial features are clearly defined, thanks in part to a perfect interplay of light and shadow. However, the overall composition remains expressionistic; the subject is delineated with a few, effective and concise pencil strokes, lending freshness and immediacy to the work.

Tiziana Fantini was born in Merano in 1923. A painter, she studied at Brera, under the guidance of Carrà, Carpi, and Funi. She began exhibiting in Milan in 1946. From the second half of the 1960s, she held a long series of solo exhibitions in many Italian cities, including shows at Galleria 32 in Milan in 1967, Galleria Il Traghetto in Venice in 1973, and Galleria Ponte Rosso, also in Milan, in 1991. She won the Suzzara Prize in 1949 and 1951. She participated in various exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She also opened the Galleria Torbandena in Trieste, making a significant cultural and artistic contribution to the city. During her Milanese years, she joined the group of painters surrounding Roberto Crippa and Gianni Dova.
