Description of the work
The visionary nature of this work's subject shows us how artist Tiziano Bertacco also experienced a Surrealist phase throughout his career. Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and permeated all fields of artistic research. In terms of the visual arts, Surrealism sought to delve into the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Regarding the language used, however, Tiziano Bertacco in this painting leans toward a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to express what his subconscious dictates and communicate it to the canvas in a frantic and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces the subject to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also the protagonist, conveyed through his brutal gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of this painting by Tiziano Bertacco. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the dramatic tone of this work: the use of a rather uniform chromatic mixture, from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the paint.
The work bears the signature on the back of Tiziano Bertacco, an artist born in San Donà di Piave in 1951. His career began when he moved to Milan in 1974. He collaborated for a time with the Arte Militante collective, then with the Situazione group, with which he created various murals and panels. From 1900 to 2000, he participated in or organized many important exhibitions both in Italy and throughout Europe. In 2002, he moved to Thailand, establishing relationships throughout Southeast Asia.
