Description of the work
Description of the work
A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and painters have always found it a challenge to depict it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering. This lithograph is particularly interesting for appreciating artist Tomaso Pizio's exploration of the moving figure. For Pizio, the basis remains the reality of a concrete and tangible representation, immediately relatable to the subject. But the artist, at the same time, feels the need to go beyond the simple phenomenal and integrate it with his own subjectivity. For this reason, the figure undergoes deformations that, however, play a fundamental role in its expression. Pizio tends to inflate volumes, breaking them down into a complex space, enhancing their plasticity and dynamism. All this is to the detriment of physiognomic and realistic details, which are of no interest to the artist. In this way, he creates a synthetic figure with a suggestive expressive power. Tomaso Pizio was born in Schilpario on September 17, 1932. In 1973 he won the “Burchert” prize in Kempen, and in the same year he participated successfully in the Second Art Biennial “Great Contemporary Masters” in Milan and the Third European Biennial in Monte Carlo; in 1992 in Fidenza he was appointed Honorary Member; in 2000 he was awarded the gold medal for artistic merit by the Bergamo Chamber of Commerce; in July 2003 the First International Prize of the City of Castles was presented to his family in Caltanissetta, at the exhibition hall of the Palazzo del Carmine Cultural Association Art & Society; in 2006 he was awarded the Ulisse Prize in memory at the Provincial Council Hall in Bergamo.
