Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. In this case, Tomaso Tommasi creates an allegorical landscape reminiscent of those of Böcklin, even in the objectifying nature of the style.
The painter Tomaso Tommasi works with a fundamentally figurative language, though one cannot truly speak of a naturalistic rendering. The subjects appear with a cold objectivity, even though their modeling is soft and their volumes smooth; the figures stand out sharply in space without any painterly effect. This serves, somewhat like the hyperrealism of the Surrealists, to heighten the enigmatic charge and hidden mystery that hovers over the visionary scene. The composition, too, is studied in this direction, with its accentuated symmetry.
Tomaso Tommasi was born in Sardinia in 1955. He studied drawing with Attilio Paoli, a student of Virgilio Guidi. In the late 1970s, while studying architecture, he developed a passion for contemporary theater, particularly multimedia staging. He studied photography and made experimental short-frame films. These experiences converged in his painting in the mid-1980s. In 2011, he was invited to the 54th Venice Biennale, exhibiting in the Italian Pavilion at the Sala Nervi in Turin.
