Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

The language of artist Benito Tomezzoli is clearly and profoundly expressionist. The subject, in its transposition of reality, undergoes a highly advanced process of synthesis that reduces forms to their purest essence. All contingency is eliminated, and everything is crushed onto a two-dimensional surface in a powerfully primordial representation. The linework is thick and deliberately rough, and the figures are sketched with a fluid rhythm. In Tomezzoli's compositions, everything seems alive in a fluid, trembling dimension. The vibrations that shake the objects are existential, in the most typical expressionist tradition. Consistent with this tradition, Tomezzoli's palette is composed of aggressive, almost violent colors.
Benito Tomezzoli was born in Garda in 1923 and passed away in 2003. A fundamentally expressionist artist, he focused primarily on popular themes related to life on the lakeshore. He produced an impressive body of paintings, many of which were exhibited at the retrospective held in Garda in 2004.
