Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
A typical example of Tommaso Cascella's work, he loved depicting the Abruzzo countryside and its rural and pastoral world. This beautiful drawing can be considered a quick sketch. However, we can see the artist's finesse in the simple means of line and hatching, which still manages to achieve a naturalistic effect and, at the same time, a lively, fresh character.
Tommaso Cascella was born in Ortona in 1890 and died in Pescara in 1968. His training began in his father Basilio's workshop, where he contributed illustrations to the book "La Vita Abruzzese." His first exhibition was held in Milan in 1909, followed by shows in Turin and Paris. At the outbreak of the First World War, he went to the front to depict wartime events. In 1918, he settled permanently in Pescara. Tommaso Cascella focused primarily on the pastoral world of Abruzzo, even going through a post-Impressionist phase in his artistic career.
