Description of the work
Description of the work
The sculpture depicts the black Madonna and Child, set within a rectangle that clearly defines her contours, almost framing the figures. The pose is composed and solemn, strongly echoing iconographic tradition, rendered in a stylized and compact form. Below the composition, a second rectangle contains the artist's signature and the title.
Tommaso Gismondi's visual language is characterized by simple forms and harmonious composition. This work demonstrates his ability to combine religious symbolism with precise geometric rigor. The use of the rectangle as an internal frame and space for text evokes an almost architectural vision of the sacred image, while the gold and bronze emphasize its precious value and sense of devotion.
Tommaso Gismondi (1906–2003) was an Italian sculptor and medallist, active primarily in Lazio. A pupil of Ettore Ferrari, he worked extensively on religious and secular themes, receiving public and private commissions. His works are found in important ecclesiastical and institutional venues, including the Vatican Library, where he created the bust of Pius XII. He is known for his skillful use of metals and a sober yet personal style.
