Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
This work is part of a series of prints that beautifully reflect Tono Zancanaro's artistic vision. The world presents itself as a reality to be playfully transfigured in drawing. Zancanaro's entire style hinges on a decisive and confident line in delineating shapes and volumes. But he always does so in a slightly lopsided, slightly dreamy manner, transforming reality into a fantasy. All this, combined with the balance of a spatial box constructed on an impeccable, excessively rational perspective, further accentuates the transition from reality to fantasy. Even the human body is always reduced to a pure graphic line, which, however, through its complex movement, gives the figure volumetric exaltation and physiognomic characterization, despite the lack of formal means. All this helps Tono Zancanaro bring to life his monochromatic world of subjects and iconographic themes that challenge the imagination.
Antonio Zancanaro (Padua 1906 - 1985), known as Tono, began painting only in 1932, after abandoning a promising sports career. He was self-taught, having trained in the Florentine anti-fascist movement with Ottone Rosai. His work primarily focuses on the humblest social situations, but always with a vein of fantasy, brought about by his lively, caricatural drawings.
